Architect-designed luxury chair crafted from carved Kashmiri walnut, showcasing traditional wood carving and contemporary furniture design

Hand-carved Walnut Chair

While this project might not be what you typically associate with an architectural scheme, it’s an example of our collaborative approach with contractors, our attention to detail, and our design language.

For over a year, we immersed ourselves in the art of traditional wood carving, a technique essential to creating finely crafted furniture. Collaborating with Kashmiri artisans, we embraced a hands-on approach to designing and making the furniture pieces.

This project mixes contemporary design with traditional decorative elements, marrying precision with age-old artisanal beauty.

The chair uses Kashmiri walnut and the local Srinagar region's masterful craftsmanship, which has sadly been a declining industry. However, the addition to UNESCO's list of Crafts and Folk Arts for 2021, it is hoped to help revive the old art. As David Pye writes in Nature and Art of Workmanship, the relationship between designer and craftsman is critical.
