Hand Detailed Home - Contemporary Extension, Birmingham

A contemporary home extension is currently being designed on the outskirts of South Birmingham. The project is a study in how careful material choices and traditional craft can lift a suburban home, extending the floor area without losing what was already good about the existing house.

A material palette drawn from the local vernacular

The exterior brings together handmade soft red clay bricks laid in Flemish bond, handcrafted Rosemary clay tiles on the pitched roof, and vertical tile cladding to continue the terracotta palette across the elevations. Materials chosen for the long view, natural, tactile, and built to weather rather than degrade. The result is a unified, timeless feel that sits comfortably with the existing house and the wider street.

A warm, low-maintenance exterior

Working with these materials, the design delivers an exterior that is warm and welcoming to the eye and durable underfoot. Low-maintenance finishes throughout. Drawn by hand, detailed with care, every junction was worked through to ensure the brickwork, tiling and cladding sit together without compromise.

Designed for how the family actually lives

The plan opens up the rear of the house to the garden, repairs the awkward thresholds the original layout had locked in, and adds the daylight and ceiling height the existing rooms could not deliver. More to follow as the project progresses through detailed design and on to the site.
